What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a refrigeration loop that can run in both directions. In summer it works exactly like a central AC, moving indoor heat outside. In winter, a reversing valve flips the flow: the outdoor coil extracts heat from cold outside air (there's usable heat in air well below freezing) and delivers it indoors. One system, both seasons, no fuel burned.

Do heat pumps work when it's freezing outside?

Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold their rated capacity to around 5°F and keep producing useful heat well below zero. What changes is efficiency: as the temperature gap grows, the compressor works harder, and below each system's balance point the auxiliary strips share the load. If yours can't keep up at 30°F, that's a service issue, not a heat-pump limitation.

Why is my heat pump steaming or icy in winter?

Light frost and periodic steam clouds are normal — that's the defrost cycle reversing briefly into cooling mode to melt frost off the outdoor coil. A coil encased in solid ice for hours is not normal: it points to a failed defrost sensor, low charge, or a fan problem, and it will grind capacity down until it's fixed.

Heat pump or furnace — which is right for my home?

It depends on your climate, electric rates, and existing equipment. Heat pumps shine in mild-to-moderate winters and all-electric homes, and they replace two systems (AC + heater) with one. In severe-winter regions, a dual-fuel setup — heat pump for most days, gas furnace for cold snaps — is often the best of both.

Stuck reversing valve

The symptom: Cold air in heating mode (or hot air in cooling), or capacity that drops in both modes.

Smart move: A technician can free or replace the valve solenoid. Don't run it stuck — you're paying full price for the wrong output.

Defrost failure

The symptom: Outdoor unit encased in ice; heating fades; loud fan buzzing against frost.

Smart move: Shut the system to "emergency heat" and book service. Running iced-over strains the compressor and fan blades.

Auxiliary heat running constantly

The symptom: The "aux heat" indicator stays on and electric bills jump 2–3x.

Smart move: Your heat pump has likely lost capacity (charge, coil, or compressor). Service recovers the efficiency you bought the system for.

Refrigerant leak

The symptom: Weak heating and weak cooling in the same year — the tell that both modes share one loop.

Smart move: Leak-search and repair. A yearly "top-off" habit costs more than fixing the leak.
