What does a central air conditioner actually do?
A central air conditioner is a heat-moving machine. It absorbs heat from your indoor air at the evaporator coil, pumps that heat outside through the refrigerant loop, and releases it at the outdoor condenser. The "cold air" you feel is simply your own air with the heat removed — which is why airflow, refrigerant charge, and clean coils matter more than any single part.

Why does my AC struggle most on the hottest days?
Because every weak link shows up at peak load. An AC is sized to remove a set amount of heat per hour; a slightly low refrigerant charge, a matted condenser coil, or leaky ducts might go unnoticed at 85°F but leave the system running nonstop — and losing ground — at 98°F. If your AC keeps up in June but not in August, it usually needs service, not replacement.
How often should a central AC be maintained?
Once a year, ideally in spring. A proper tune-up cleans both coils, verifies refrigerant charge and capacitor health, clears the condensate drain, and checks amp draws — the exact items that cause mid-summer breakdowns. Between visits, the single best thing you can do is change the filter every 1–3 months.
When is repair the wrong call?
When the compressor fails out of warranty on a system 12+ years old, or when a repair costs more than about a third of replacement. Frequent refrigerant top-offs on an aging R-410A system also tip the math toward replacement, since each visit is paying to lose the same refrigerant twice.

Frozen evaporator coil
The symptom: Weak airflow, ice on the copper lines, water around the indoor unit when it thaws.
Smart move: Turn cooling off (fan on) to thaw, replace the filter — then have the airflow and charge checked before running it again.
Refrigerant leak
The symptom: Cooling that fades over weeks, hissing at the coil, a system that "needs a recharge" every season.
Smart move: Leak-search and repair, not another top-off. Repeated recharges cost more and mask the real problem.
Failed capacitor or hard-starting compressor
The symptom: Humming or clicking outside, the fan spins but the unit doesn't cool, breaker trips on start.
Smart move: Stop running it — repeated hard starts finish off compressors. This is a fast, inexpensive fix caught early.
Clogged condensate drain
The symptom: Water pooling by the air handler, a musty smell, or a system that shuts itself off via the float switch.
Smart move: Have the drain line cleared and treated. Left alone, this is one of the most common causes of ceiling water damage.
