How does electricity move through my house?
Power arrives from the utility through your meter into the main breaker panel — the distribution hub of the whole house. The main breaker can cut everything at once; below it, individual breakers split power into branch circuits sized for their job (15A for lights, 20A for kitchens, 30–50A for dryers and ranges). Every safety layer — breakers, GFCIs, grounding — exists to do one thing: stop electricity from taking a path you didn't intend.

Why does the same breaker keep tripping?
A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job — the question is why. Most often the circuit is simply overloaded (space heaters and hair dryers are the classic culprits). But if it trips instantly even with everything unplugged, suspect a short or a ground fault in the wiring. Never "fix" it with a bigger breaker: the breaker is sized to the wire, and oversizing it turns the wall wiring into the fuse.
Which electrical warning signs should I never ignore?
Warm outlets or switch plates, a fishy or burning smell, buzzing from the panel, lights that dim when appliances start, and any scorch marks. All five point to loose connections or overloads generating heat inside walls — the conditions behind most residential electrical fires. These are same-week service calls, not someday projects.
Does my older home need a panel upgrade?
If you have a 100-amp service and modern loads — EV charger, heat pump, induction range — you're likely near the ceiling; an upgrade to 200A creates headroom and replaces aging breakers at the same time. Homes with fuse boxes or certain known-defective panel brands should be evaluated regardless of load. A load calculation gives you the real answer instead of a guess.

Frequent breaker trips
The symptom: The same circuit cuts out under normal use.
Smart move: Redistribute big loads first. If trips continue, have the circuit inspected — don't upsize the breaker.
Hot outlets or burning smell
The symptom: Warm cover plates, discoloration, intermittent buzzing or a faint acrid smell.
Smart move: Stop using the outlet and get it inspected promptly. Loose terminations arc, and arcing starts fires.
Dead or worn-out GFCI
The symptom: The TEST button doesn't trip it, or outlets downstream are dead until RESET is pressed.
Smart move: Replace failed GFCIs immediately — they're the layer protecting people, not property.
Whole-house flickering
The symptom: Lights dim across every room, especially when large appliances start.
Smart move: Could be a loose service neutral — genuinely dangerous. This one warrants an urgent professional call.
