The hardest-working machines in your home.

Refrigerator, dishwasher, laundry, disposal — four machines, four diagrams. Tap through each one to see what's inside and what wears out.

What do all major appliances have in common?

Almost every major appliance is the same recipe: a motor or compressor doing the work, valves and pumps moving water or refrigerant, a heating element, and sensors deciding when to stop. That's also why they fail in predictable ways — seals dry out, valves stick, elements burn open, and pumps clog. Knowing which part does what turns a mystery breakdown into a checklist.

Repair or replace — how do I decide for an appliance?

Use the 50% rule as a starting point: if a repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the appliance is past half its expected life (10–13 years for most fridges and laundry, 9–10 for dishwashers), replacement usually wins. But a cheap, known failure — a fridge start relay, a dryer thermal fuse, a washer drain pump — is almost always worth fixing regardless of age.

What maintenance actually extends appliance life?

Five habits cover 90% of it: vacuum the refrigerator's condenser coils twice a year, rinse the dishwasher filter monthly, clean the full dryer vent duct annually, replace washer supply hoses every five years, and never grind the disposal's "never" list. Every one of those targets the exact failure mode that ends each machine early.

Why did my breaker trip when the appliance started?

Motors and compressors draw a surge of current at startup — several times their running load. A breaker that trips at startup can mean a weakening compressor or motor drawing excessive inrush, a failing start relay or capacitor, or a circuit shared with too many other loads. If it's new behavior on an old appliance, the appliance is usually the one asking for attention.

Failure modes

What goes wrong — and what to do.

The breakdowns we see most, the symptoms that give them away, and the smart first move for each.

Fridge warm, freezer fine

The symptom: Fresh-food section creeping warm while the freezer stays cold.

Smart move: Classic defrost failure — the evaporator is icing over. A repair visit beats losing a week of groceries.

Dishwasher not cleaning

The symptom: Film on glasses, grit on the top rack, or a musty smell.

Smart move: Rinse the filter and clear the spray-arm nozzles first; if it persists, the element or circulation pump needs a look.

Dryer takes two cycles

The symptom: Clothes still damp after a full cycle; the top of the dryer runs hot.

Smart move: The vent duct is choked with lint. Clean the whole run — this one is a fire risk, not just an annoyance.

Disposal hums but won't spin

The symptom: A jammed flywheel — power reaches the motor but the plate can't turn.

Smart move: Power off, free the plate with the hex key underneath, remove the culprit, press reset. Never reach in with power on.
