A garbage disposal is an electric unit mounted under a kitchen sink that grinds food scraps so they can be flushed down the drain. A motor spins a plate with swiveling impellers that throw food against a stationary grind ring; running water then carries the fine particles out through the trap and drain line.
Why it matters to you
A jammed or failed disposal can back up the sink and the dishwasher that drains through it. Garbage disposals are on the appliance list of the Whole Home Repair plan, with covered repairs paid up to your plan's coverage limit.
Practical guidance
Run cold water while grinding and keep grease, fibrous peels, and bones out. If the motor hums but will not turn, switch it off and use the hex key in the bottom socket to free the plate, then press the reset button.
