What is a septic tank?

A septic tank is a buried, watertight tank of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene that receives all household wastewater on properties without a sewer connection. Solids settle as sludge, grease floats as scum, and the clarified effluent flows through an outlet baffle and filter to a drain field, where soil completes treatment. EPA guidance calls for regular inspection and pumping.

Why it matters to you

A tank that is never pumped eventually pushes solids into the drain field, the hardest part of the system to restore. At MyHappyHome™, septic coverage is not part of a base plan; it is available through the optional septic system add-on, priced at checkout.

Practical guidance

Have the system inspected about every three years and the tank pumped every three to five years, as EPA guidance suggests, depending on tank size and household use. Keep wipes, grease, and harsh chemicals out of drains, and never enter or lean into an open septic tank, since its gases can be fatal.
