What is an HVAC tune-up?

An HVAC tune-up is a scheduled preventive service visit for a heating or cooling system, usually in spring for cooling and fall for heating. Following checklists such as ACCA Standard 4, a technician cleans or inspects coils, checks refrigerant pressures and capacitors, clears the condensate drain, tests safety controls and inspects gas burners and ignition.

Why it matters to you

Most mid-season breakdowns trace back to dirty coils, clogged drains and weak capacitors that a tune-up catches early. With MyHappyHome™, seasonal tune-ups are part of the HVAC Maintenance plan, which covers tune-ups only; repairs are covered only on the Whole Home Repair plan.

Practical guidance

Book the cooling tune-up before the first hot spell and the heating tune-up before the first cold one, and change the air filter every one to three months in between. Ask for the readings taken, such as refrigerant pressures and capacitor values, so you can compare them year to year.
